The British government has taken a big step on Thursday regarding Russia, which is waging war against Ukraine. The UK government said on Thursday it had frozen Russia's assets worth 18 billion pounds ($20.5 billion). This property belongs to Russian rich people, institutions, and other individuals. This is considered to be the biggest action by the British government against Russia so far. This is more than six billion pounds more than any Russian assets frozen by Britain so far.
Andrew Griffith, a junior government minister in Britain's Treasury, said: "We have imposed the most severe sanctions ever on Russia and it will cripple their war machine." Our message is clear, we will not allow Putin to succeed in this brutal war. The fighting between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than eight months. Looking at the battle so far, Russia's hold has weakened quite a bit on many points.
Russian army retreating from Kherson
Russia's military has announced it is withdrawing from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and its surrounding areas. This will be considered another humiliating blow for Russia in this battle that has been going on for the last eight months. However, Ukrainian officials did not immediately confirm the move. In recent days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russians are masquerading as moving from Kherson to implicate their ploy. Zelensky called the attempt to persuade civilians to enter the Russian-controlled 'battlefield' a 'drama'.
Voting against Russia on Monday
The United Nations General Assembly will vote on Monday on a resolution holding Russia accountable for violating international law by attacking Ukraine. The proposal also provides for the payment of compensation by Russia. The draft resolution stresses the need to establish an "international mechanism of compensation for damage or injury caused by Russia's "wrong actions" against Ukraine.
