The Lucknow Super Giants suffered a defeat in the Super Over against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This marked the sixth loss of the current season for LSG, led by captain Rishabh Pant. A major reason for losing the match to KKR was Captain Rishabh Pant's decision to place his trust in Nicholas Pooran—a move that backfired spectacularly. Following the match, Pant acknowledged his error in judgment as captain and stated that his team is in need of a break.
What did LSG Captain Rishabh Pant say?
Essentially, it was the same old story for the Lucknow Super Giants; the batting unit once again failed to click as a cohesive unit. For this match, LSG made yet another change to their opening pair. Aiden Markram was brought back to open alongside Mitchell Marsh, while Ayush Badoni was shifted down to number 5. This alteration yielded no positive results for the team, and Pant openly admitted that the "pressure" on both himself and the team is mounting.
Speaking during the post-match presentation following the defeat, Pant said, "Look, we need a break. We will regroup and refresh. Pressure will always be there, but we have to look for the answers within ourselves, not outside. Every player needs to take responsibility. This isn't about one or two players; it's about the entire unit." Addressing the decision to send Pooran out to bat, Pant remarked, "We had a discussion within the group, and Nicky P's name came up. Even if he isn't in his best form, you have to back your players during difficult situations. He has the ability to win matches single-handedly at any moment. There are no excuses. We are looking for the positives. It might not seem very positive right now, but things will look much brighter after the break."
Pant's statement has sparked outrage among fans. On social media, people are labeling it a "lame" excuse. Fans argue that since Pooran was clearly out of form, sending him out to bat was a misguided decision. Pooran has delivered consistently poor performances throughout the 2026 IPL season. While Pant acknowledged that Pooran is not currently in peak form, he maintained that it was necessary to show faith in the player during a challenging phase. However, this gamble proved costly for LSG, as the team ultimately succumbed to defeat in the Super Over. The Lucknow captain said:
"We had a discussion within the group, and Nicky's name came up. Even if he isn't currently in his best form, you have to place your trust in your player during difficult situations. He can turn it on at any moment. There are no excuses. Things might not look very positive right now, but after the break, they will definitely be much more positive—that's for sure." — Rishabh Pant.
When asked why he chose to have Digvesh Rathi bowl the final over, he replied: "Look, there are moments in cricket when bowlers have to step up and bowl the tough overs. I was looking for a wicket during the middle overs, which is why I handed him the ball. We didn't get the wicket, but that was the thought process behind it. If you overthink things too much out on the field, things stop being easy."
