The death of three Chinese nationals in a loader accident in Nepal last month suggests Beijing is bringing its citizens to work, leaving people in the Himalayan nation out of jobs. According to Khabar Hub, the loader accident on the Kathmandu-Tarai (Madhesh) fast track in the last week of April revealed that a large number of them employ Chinese while only a few Nepalese technicians are employed in the project.
Reports say that it has not been disclosed yet how many Chinese nationals in Nepal have obtained work permits to work on the project. Furthermore, the Nepal Army, the contractor for the National Pride project, has not disclosed how many foreign technicians have been given labor permits, Khabar Hub reported.
In Nepal, a large number of engineers are losing their jobs sitting at home, laborers are being forced to go abroad without jobs, and on the other hand, a large number of Chinese nationals are being employed in projects of national pride in Nepal.
The matter of insurance came to the fore after the death of the employee
According to the information received from the contractor regarding fast track insurance, Package 1 and Package 2 has not been insured yet, Khabar Hub said. This is mainly because the Chinese contractor has been insisting for nine months that the insurance should be in China under his reinsurance company. Hence the delay in insurance.
Chinese contractor wants to take insurance from Nepal's private sector
Fast Track is a project which is being run by Nepal Army. Citing sources, Khabar Hub reported that the Chinese contractor is trying to get insurance from private sector Nepal Insurance, Sanima Insurance, and Premier Insurance instead of the National Insurance Society. The contract was awarded in defiance of a letter from the Parliamentary Accounts Committee to the Defense Ministry for cancellation of the contract.
There is a problem in fast track work
The work of the contracting companies for the proposed 72.6 km Kathmandu-Tarai-Madhesh Expressway is not gaining momentum. This has created the possibility of getting the work completed on time. Failure to deliver the goods on time, consultants of companies getting into disputes, and problems with insurance and reinsurance are making fast track work difficult.
Nepal Army got the responsibility of fast track construction
In April 2017, the Council of Ministers had given the responsibility of fast track construction to the Nepal Army. This National Pride project is targeted to be completed by 2024. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 175 billion. This road of 76.2 km is the shortest road connecting Kathmandu Valley with Terai-Madhesh.
