Death toll in Turkey-Syria from devastating earthquake crosses 19,300, slow rescue operations anger people

The death toll from Monday's devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has reached above 19,300. With the speed of relief and rescue work in the affected areas, the number of dead and injured is also increasing continuously. The natural disaster has killed 16,100 people in Turkey and more than 3,200 in Syria. There are 64,000 wounded in Turkey and more than 5,000 in Syria.

Meanwhile, President Tayyip Erdogan is facing criticism over the government's slow rescue and relief efforts. Angry people are asking the government that where is the tax that was collected in the name of earthquakes for the last two and a half decades. In Diyarbakır, east of Antakya, rescuers pulled an injured woman alive after nearly 72 hours from a collapsed building in the morning. However, three other people accompanying the woman were found dead in the debris. In Antakya itself, a woman, Serp Arslan, was looking with moist eyes at the rubble of the building under which her mother and brother were buried. The work of removing the huge amount of debris here has now started. Meanwhile, a United Nations aid truck arrived in rebel-held northwestern Syria on Thursday morning.

 

Turkey reached the sixth flight from India under Operation Dost

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that the sixth aircraft from India carrying rescue personnel, essential supplies, and medical equipment has reached Turkey for earthquake relief efforts under Operation Dost. In this, more relief workers, dog squads, and essential medicines have been sent to the earthquake-affected country. On its official Twitter handle, the Ministry of External Affairs also posted pictures of a mobile hospital it is running in Turkey, where medical experts are preparing to treat people in case of emergency.
