Seismologists in India have become alert due to the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and the cracks in Uttarkashi before that. According to the chief scientist of Hyderabad-based NGRI, the risk of earthquakes in the Himalayan region is increasing due to the sliding of the Indian plate.
An eminent meteorologist and geologist have warned that the Indian tectonic plate is shifting at the rate of 5 cm per year. Due to this, the tension in the Himalayas is increasing. Due to this, there is a possibility of increasing the risk of earthquakes in the coming days.
The Indian plate is moving
On February 21, Seismologist and Principal Scientist at Hyderabad-based Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) Dr. N Purnachandra Rao said that the outer part of the Earth is made up of different plates and they are constantly moving. The Indian plate is moving 5 cm every year. This is increasing the strain on the Himalayas and increasing the risk of earthquakes.
This area is sensitive
The scientist said that we have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. Including Uttarakhand, this area is known as the Seismic Gap between Himachal and the western part of Nepal. This area is sensitive in terms of earthquakes and an earthquake can occur here at any time. According to information from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 was recorded 56 km north of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh on February 20.
earthquake recorded in Himachal
According to NCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km from the earth's surface. NCS said that on the night of February 20, at about 10.38 pm, an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 was recorded 56 km north of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers from the surface of the earth. An earthquake was also recorded in Nandigam, Andhra Pradesh on 19 February.
