The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has warned that Islamic State and al-Qaeda have increased the spread of online propaganda to launch attacks and hoard money. The FATF has expressed concern about terrorist attacks in Africa and South Asia including Afghanistan, Iraq. The FATF has said that the threat of terrorism remains in many parts of the world. Islamic State has been behind the recent major attacks. Hundreds of people have been killed in these attacks, most of them civilians.
Terrorist organizations such as Islamic State and Al Qaeda are working on new payment technology to raise, send and deposit money. The virtual assets of these organizations are a huge threat. Along with all this, in recent times, these terrorist organizations are getting cooperation from many more organizations, due to which the threat has increased further.
Both Islamic State and Al Qaeda have a presence in countries like Afghanistan. The Islamic State has carried out several suicide attacks in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over Afghanistan. FATF has said in a separate statement regarding Afghanistan that money laundering and terror financing in Afghanistan is developing an environment of risk, which can have an impact on the whole world.
The FATF has said that the Islamic State's defeat in 2019 significantly affected its ability to generate revenue, but the group is still able to raise money through legal and illegal sources. At present, the Islamic State has reserves of about $ 25-50 million. Islamic State is looting local citizens and businesses to increase revenue. Islamic State is collecting money through kidnapping, extortion, human trafficking, etc.
