The government has extended the plan till November to provide free food grains to the poor people of the country. In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 80 crore people of the country will now be provided free food grains by November. The Prime Minister also promised to introduce the 'Ek Desh Ek Ration Card' scheme. Work on this scheme has been going on for the last few years, under which migrant laborers can get free food grains in any part of the country. In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister did not mention the increase in fuel prices and tensions with China in eastern Ladakh. The opposition, especially Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, had sought to clarify the situation with the Prime Minister on both these issues, especially the alleged occupation of Indian territory in China. Fuel prices have increased 22 times in the last three months. In his 17-minute speech, the Prime Minister focused on extending the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana' period till November. He also said that the people are not taking necessary precautions to avoid Kovid-19 as before. Modi said that people should also take precautions themselves and motivate other people for the same. Modi said that now the festival will start in a few days and during that time the needs of the people increase, so the expenditure also increases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the free grain scheme will continue till the end of November. The Prime Minister mentioned Chhath Puja twice in his speech. Assembly elections will be held in Bihar before Diwali and Chhath. After the announcement of the Prime Minister, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also announced to extend the free food distribution scheme in her state till June 2021. Assembly elections will be held in West Bengal in May 2021. Apart from this, elections will also be held in the same year in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry. After the Prime Minister's announcement, all eligible ration cardholders will get five kilograms of free food grains by November. For this, the government will have to provide an additional 2 crore tonnes of food grains.
