Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, a new artificial intelligence model designed to tackle complex software engineering and cybersecurity challenges. The company says the model can identify software vulnerabilities, assess whether they can be exploited, and help developers create code patches to address them.
Unlike AI tools focused primarily on generating code or answering technical questions, Gemini 4 Carbon is designed to work through lengthy, multi-step engineering tasks. According to Google, it can spend days investigating difficult problems, working through unsuccessful approaches and identifying subtle bugs across large codebases and low-level systems.
The launch highlights Google's efforts to develop AI systems that can support the entire software security process, from finding vulnerabilities to helping fix them.
What Is Google Gemini 4 Carbon?
Gemini 4 Carbon is Google's latest frontier AI model, developed with an emphasis on advanced coding, cybersecurity and long-running engineering workflows.
According to Google DeepMind, the model can investigate complicated technical problems that require sustained reasoning and multiple steps. These include finding the root cause of software bugs, analyzing potential security weaknesses and developing patches.
The model builds on Gemini 4 Argon, which Google introduced approximately two weeks earlier. Google says Carbon improves on Argon across several coding, security and reliability evaluations.
However, access is initially limited. Google plans to introduce the model to a selected group of cybersecurity defenders through its Fairwind Program before expanding access to trusted partners. Wider availability for developers, businesses and consumers is planned, but Google has not announced a specific public release date.
Google Gemini 4 Carbon Cybersecurity Benchmark Results
Google has reported results across three evaluations focused on different stages of cybersecurity work: vulnerability discovery, exploitation testing and patch development.
The company reports the following scores:
SEC-bench Pro: 88.2% for finding software vulnerabilities.
ExploitGym: 54.8% for evaluating exploitation capabilities.
CWE-bench: 71.0% for developing fixes for software weaknesses.
These benchmarks measure distinct tasks. Identifying a vulnerability is not the same as proving that it can be exploited, and detecting a security problem does not automatically mean a proposed patch will resolve it correctly.
Google says Carbon performed strongly across this process, potentially helping security teams investigate flaws and develop fixes more efficiently. The company also notes that these external cybersecurity benchmark evaluations were conducted without guardrails, so the results should not be treated as a guarantee of performance in every real-world deployment.
Google Claims More Than 2x Improvement in Secure Code Generation
Google says Gemini 4 Carbon achieved more than twice the success rate of Gemini 4 Argon in internal benchmarks for generating secure code.
The company's Chrome team also reported that Carbon performed more than ten times better than a frontier model from another AI laboratory when generating high-quality security patches. Google did not identify the competing model in its announcement, so the comparison should be understood as a company-reported result rather than an independently established ranking.
If these improvements translate into practical software development, AI-assisted patching could help engineers investigate vulnerabilities and prepare corrective changes more quickly.
Nevertheless, developers still need to review generated patches, run appropriate tests and confirm that the fix addresses the underlying problem without introducing new defects.
Gemini 4 Carbon Focuses on Reliability and AI Safety
Google says it has also worked to improve the model's reliability while strengthening its cybersecurity capabilities.
In internal testing, Carbon produced approximately half as many unsupported claims as Argon. Google also reported an almost 80% reduction in high-severity misalignment alerts in its internal coding environments.
Unsupported claims occur when a model presents information without adequate evidence. Misalignment alerts can indicate behaviour that does not follow the model's intended objectives or instructions.
The company says Carbon is designed to handle ambiguous or difficult tasks more carefully, including identifying missing evidence and highlighting discrepancies rather than making unsupported assumptions.
These figures are based on Google's internal evaluations. Actual results can vary according to the task, software environment and deployment conditions.
Gemini 4 Carbon Shows Results in Prompt Injection and Cheating Tests
Google has also highlighted results from tests designed to evaluate whether the model follows instructions appropriately and resists certain attacks.
On Terminal-Bench 4.0, the company reported a 0% successful-cheating rate, with cheating attempts recorded at 0.4%. On the Grey Swan indirect prompt-injection benchmark, Google reported a 0% attack success rate.
Prompt injection is a technique in which malicious instructions embedded in prompts or external content attempt to manipulate an AI system's behaviour. For AI tools working with code, files and development environments, resisting such attacks is important because manipulated instructions could lead to unsafe actions or unreliable results.
The reported outcomes are encouraging, but zero successful attacks in a particular evaluation does not establish that a system is immune to every possible attack. Continued testing and appropriate security controls remain essential.
When Will Google Gemini 4 Carbon Be Available?
Google is taking a phased approach to the model's release. Initial access is being offered to a subset of cybersecurity defenders, with additional trusted partners expected to receive access through the Fairwind Program.
Google says it will use feedback from these users to refine the model's safeguards before expanding availability to developers, businesses and consumers.
The company announced introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. After the introductory period, the announced prices are $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Google has not specified when the introductory pricing will end.
A broader public release date and detailed Carbon-specific API specifications have not yet been confirmed in the announcement.
What Gemini 4 Carbon Could Mean for Software Security
Gemini 4 Carbon reflects a broader shift towards AI systems that can assist with more than code generation. By combining vulnerability discovery, exploitation testing and patch development, the model is designed to support several stages of software security work.
For development teams, these capabilities could help accelerate investigations, prioritise potential weaknesses and prepare fixes for human review. The benefits will depend on how well the model performs in real environments and how effectively organisations verify its output.
For now, Google's published benchmark scores and internal results offer an early indication of the model's capabilities, rather than a guarantee that every vulnerability can be found or fixed automatically.
As access expands, independent testing and real-world deployment will help clarify how Gemini 4 Carbon compares with other AI coding tools and how reliably it can support cybersecurity professionals.
