Shares of HDFC Bank came under heavy selling pressure after the lender reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results and received a rating downgrade from global brokerage Investec.

The stock opened sharply lower and fell nearly 5% during early trade. On the BSE, HDFC Bank opened at ₹780.85 compared with its previous close of ₹819.65. During morning trade, the stock touched ₹780.45, and at around 9:30 AM, it was trading at ₹781.25, down 4.68%.

The weakness in HDFC Bank also weighed on other private banking stocks, with Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank declining sharply. In contrast, ICICI Bank remained in positive territory following its strong quarterly earnings.

Why Did HDFC Bank Shares Fall?

Investor sentiment weakened after HDFC Bank's June quarter earnings missed market expectations on several key parameters.

Adding to the pressure, brokerage firm Investec downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold", citing slower growth and margin concerns.

Investec's Latest View

Previous Rating: Buy

Current Rating: Hold

Revised Target Price: ₹920 (Earlier ₹915)

Potential Upside: Around 12% from the previous closing price

Although Investec marginally increased its target price, it believes near-term upside remains limited due to operational challenges.

Key Reasons Behind the Brokerage Downgrade

According to Investec, several factors contributed to the weaker outlook:

Retail loan growth remained slower than expected.

Credit costs increased due to seasonal factors.

Net interest margin continued to face pressure.

Loan growth relied more on wholesale lending.

Management did not provide clarity on CEO succession planning.

Overall earnings fell short of market expectations.

These factors prompted the brokerage to adopt a more cautious stance on the stock.

Retail Loan Growth Remains a Concern

One of the biggest disappointments in HDFC Bank's Q1 performance was the slowdown in retail lending.

Brokerages believe stronger retail credit growth is essential for sustaining profitability and improving margins. Persistent pressure on net interest margins has also become a concern for investors.

HDFC Bank Still Retains Strong Analyst Support

Despite the downgrade, HDFC Bank continues to enjoy broad support from analysts.

According to available analyst consensus:

46 out of 47 analysts continue to recommend a "Buy" rating.

The latest downgrade marks the first rating cut in four months.

This indicates that while short-term concerns remain, many analysts continue to see long-term value in the stock.

Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank Also Under Pressure

The weakness was not limited to HDFC Bank.

At around 9:30 AM:

Axis Bank shares fell nearly 5% to around ₹1,264.

Kotak Mahindra Bank declined about 3% during early trading.

The broader private banking sector witnessed profit booking following the latest earnings announcements.

ICICI Bank Bucks the Trend

Unlike its peers, ICICI Bank emerged as one of the strongest performers in the banking sector.

The stock traded around 0.77% higher at approximately ₹1,453, supported by better-than-expected first-quarter earnings.

Brokerages remain optimistic about ICICI Bank due to:

Strong loan growth

Healthy net interest margins

Improving asset quality

Robust profitability

Positive management outlook

Its earnings performance helped the stock outperform other major private banks.
