Due to inflation in Britain, the situation has become such that now along with the common people, teachers, health workers, and pensioners also have to depend on food banks. In December 2022 and January 2023, people sought maximum help from the Food Bank. Around 154 organizations run food banks in the UK, which distribute free meals to people.
The Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) has prepared this report based on data from 90 percent of food banks. The 85 organizations operating food banks reported that when the number of people asking for food increased, they cut down on food several times and also turned away many people who came to ask for food.
3.25 lakh people have gone to the food bank
The largest food bank in Britain is being run by an organization named The Trussell Trust. It has more than 1300 food banks. According to the trust, it distributed 1.3 million emergency food packets between April and September last year. According to statistics, so far more than 3 lakh 20 thousand people have gone to the Food Bank for food.
This number is a third more than in 2021, while it is 50% more than before the pandemic. Due to inflation, the purchasing power of the people has also been affected. This has also led to a series of strikes in Britain in recent months. There is also a possibility of junior doctors going on strike. Therefore, common people are finding themselves unable to buy food. The dependence of such people has increased on food banks.
People doing jobs are also taking help from food banks
IFAN's study has revealed that many such people who have gone to food banks for food are currently employed. Of the people who are going to the food banks, more than 80 percent are those who have never taken such help before.
