Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said the G20 countries can use the Lifestyle for the Environment initiative first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a source of inspiration. He said that this initiative can help in solving challenges like climate change.
Birol told the news agency ANI, “I am honored to have been requested by Prime Minister Modi for a bilateral meeting. In the meeting, I talked about the great achievements that India has made. Like- as working in the energy sector, getting electricity to millions of Indians, Ujjwala Yojana, and promoting renewable energy.
Apart from this, he said that in the last few years, India has been placed at the center of global international affairs, which is amazing. Let us tell you that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mission Life movement (lifestyle for the environment) at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat in October last year.
IEA prepares a report on the LiFE mission
Birol further said that the Prime Minister's initiative LiFe is a source of inspiration for other countries and can help in tackling climate challenges. The IEA will work with its energy experts toward the objectives of the LiFe mission for the G20 countries. He added that if they can implement the initiative, it will help in reaching climate goals.
Birol said the IEA has prepared a report on the life mission. The report says that if the whole world follows the guidelines that have been summarized by Prime Minister Modi, global emissions will come down significantly.
World needs to invest in clean energy: Birol
"People need to pay less for energy services, which will lead to less inequality in the world," Birol said. We will have fewer climate-related problems, the economy will be better. He said that the world needs to invest in clean energy and there is a need to invest in renewable energy.
He also said that it is also the job of international financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund to help developing countries mobilize clean energy investment. He said that first proposed by the Prime Minister at COP 26, Mission LiFE is envisioned as an India-led global mass movement that will spur individual and collective action to protect and preserve the environment.
