Despite being elected to the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future is uncertain in this format. Both players have already retired from the Test and T20I format, so now their game time is limited to ODI only. That too in a period when the ODI matches are played very rarely.
It can be assumed that both Rohit and Kohli want to be a part of Team India till the 2027 World Cup, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to give any guarantee on it. At the same time, BCCI has shown strictness on Rohit-Virat.
Rohit-Virat will have to play domestic cricket.
In fact, Rohit (Rohit Sharma Odi) has also been removed from the team's ODI captaincy, causing serious questions about him and Kohli being in the team. Meanwhile, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has appealed to both the giants to return to domestic cricket.
Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel,
"Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli want to play the 2027 World Cup, but match fitness will be the biggest challenge for them."
Virat Kohli is considered not only in the Indian team but also one of the most fit cricketers in the whole world, while Rohit Sharma has also worked hard on his fitness before the ODI series against Australia. But Irfan believes that if both of them want to play till the 2027 World Cup, then they will also have to prove their match fitness.
He adds,
"Rohit has done a lot of work on his fitness, and he is focused on it. But there is a difference between normal fitness and match-time fitness. If you are not playing cricket regularly, both will have to ensure that they get some game time. They should play domestic cricket."
Also, he said,
"They are big players, know what to do, and they have no shortage of experience. But when they are not playing T20, there will be a long gap between ODIs. In such a situation, they will have to keep themselves fit by playing matches regularly. Then their dream of playing the 2027 World Cup will be fulfilled."
What did Ajit Agarkar say?
Earlier, the Chairman of the Selection Committee, Ajit Agarkar, while announcing the Indian ODI and T20 team, said that the players who are out of the national team or are available will have to play domestic cricket.
He had said that we have already decided that whenever the players are empty, they will have to play domestic cricket. This is the reason that senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were seen playing in domestic cricket in the last season.
