Shares of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) made their much-awaited stock market debut on Thursday, September 24, listing at ₹1,800 per share on the BSE against the IPO issue price of ₹1,785.
The listing price represented a gain of around 0.8% over the issue price, resulting in a relatively muted debut compared with some of the higher premiums indicated in the grey market before listing.
Despite the modest listing gain, NSE entered the listed market with a valuation of more than ₹4.45 lakh crore, making it significantly larger than the already-listed BSE in terms of market capitalisation.
With its listing, NSE has become the second listed stock exchange in India after BSE.

NSE Listing Falls Short of Grey Market Expectations
The NSE IPO attracted considerable attention before its stock market debut, with grey market indications pointing towards a premium over the issue price.
However, the actual BSE listing price of ₹1,800 translated into a premium of only around 0.8%, below the expectations suggested by the grey market before listing.
Grey market premiums are unofficial indicators and do not guarantee the actual listing price. The NSE's debut the difference that can emerge between unofficial market expectations and the price discovered when a stock begins trading on a recognised exchange.
NSE Market Cap Crosses ₹4.45 Lakh Crore
At the ₹1,800 listing price, NSE entered the public market with a market capitalisation of more than ₹4.45 lakh crore.
This is substantially higher than the market capitalisation of BSE, which was around ₹1.33 lakh crore at the time of comparison reported on Thursday.
The comparison is significant because NSE and BSE are India's two listed stock exchanges, with NSE's debut giving investors direct access to the country's largest exchange operator through its listed equity.
NSE IPO: ₹22,562 Crore Offer for Sale
The NSE IPO was one of India's largest public issues and raised approximately ₹22,562 crore.
Importantly, the issue was structured entirely as an Offer for Sale (OFS). The offer involved the sale of up to 12.64 crore existing equity shares, meaning the proceeds went to the selling shareholders rather than being raised as fresh capital by NSE.
The IPO opened for subscription on September 17 and closed on September 21, with shares scheduled to list on the BSE on September 24.
NSE IPO Price Band, Lot Size and Minimum Investment
The NSE IPO was offered in a price band of ₹1,700 to ₹1,785 per share.
The lot size was fixed at eight shares, meaning investors applying at the upper end of the price band needed a minimum of ₹14,280 for one lot.
The issue received strong overall investor demand. According to market reports, the IPO was subscribed 5.71 times, with qualified institutional buyers subscribing 12.68 times their allocated portion.
NSE IPO Anchor Investors Raise ₹6,746 Crore
Ahead of the public issue, NSE raised approximately ₹6,746 crore from anchor investors by allocating shares at ₹1,785 apiece.
More than 150 anchor investors participated in the allocation, with several major global and domestic institutional investors taking part.
The anchor allocation further highlighted the institutional interest surrounding India's largest stock exchange's long-awaited public-market debut.
Why NSE's Listing Is Significant
NSE's listing marks the culmination of a lengthy process through which the exchange sought to transition to public ownership.
The exchange's IPO came after years of regulatory and legal developments and amid discussions around India's changing derivatives market and regulatory framework. Reuters reported before the IPO that NSE was facing investor questions around derivatives-driven growth and regulatory changes affecting the segment.
The IPO nevertheless attracted substantial investor demand, with the final issue receiving bids for more than five times the shares on offer.
NSE vs BSE: Market Cap Comparison
NSE's listing also brings renewed attention to the valuation gap between India's two listed exchanges.
Exchange Approx. Market Cap at NSE Debut
NSE ₹4.45 lakh crore+
BSE ₹1.33 lakh crore
Based on these reported figures, NSE's market capitalisation was more than three times that of BSE at the time of its debut.
However, market capitalisation can change continuously with share prices, so the comparison represents the respective valuations around the time of NSE's listing rather than a permanent valuation difference.
NSE Shares Make Historic Stock Market Debut
The NSE share listing represents an important development for India's capital markets. The country's largest stock exchange is now itself a publicly traded company, giving investors an opportunity to participate directly in its ownership.
Although NSE shares listed at only around a 0.8% premium to the IPO price, the company's more than ₹4.45 lakh crore opening market capitalisation puts it among India's largest listed businesses.
The focus will now shift from the much-anticipated IPO and listing to NSE's performance as a listed company, including its revenue growth, derivatives business, regulatory environment and ability to diversify its sources of income.
