Jio IPO Allotment: The Reliance IPO turned ₹1,000 into ₹53 lakh—can Ambani’s Jio pull off a similar feat?

Posted on 27th Oct 2026 12:53 pm by rohit kumar

The Jio Platforms IPO has attracted significant investor interest, becoming India’s largest initial public offering to date. The ₹30,213-crore public issue was subscribed 22.19 times, with bidding closing on October 23, 2026. Following the completion of the allotment process, Jio Platforms shares are scheduled to list on the stock exchanges on October 28.

The public issue also brings attention to the remarkable wealth-creation history of Reliance Industries. When the company, then known as Reliance Textile Industries, launched its IPO in 1977, investors could purchase shares for ₹10 each. Over nearly five decades, bonus issues, share-price appreciation and the demerger of Jio Financial Services significantly increased the value of a long-term investment.

Here is a look at the latest Jio IPO details and how an initial investment of ₹1,000 in Reliance’s 1977 IPO is estimated to have grown to approximately ₹52.93 lakh.

Jio Platforms IPO: Key Details

Jio Platforms’ IPO opened for subscription on October 21 and closed on October 23, 2026. The issue received a strong response across investor categories and was fully subscribed within approximately 100 minutes of opening.

The IPO raised ₹30,213 crore, making it India’s largest public issue. It received around 1.38 crore applications, while overall subscription reached 22.19 times the shares on offer.

Qualified institutional buyers showed particularly strong demand, subscribing to their reserved portion approximately 70.55 times. The retail investor category was subscribed 2.72 times, while non-institutional investor demand was also strong.

Jio Platforms shares are scheduled to list on October 28, 2026. Investors will be watching the listing price closely, but the final market performance will depend on demand, valuation, market conditions and the company’s growth outlook.

Reliance Industries IPO in 1977: A Historic Beginning

Reliance Industries’ journey in the public markets began in 1977, when Reliance Textile Industries launched its IPO at ₹10 per share. The issue raised approximately ₹2.8 crore and was oversubscribed seven times.

The offering was notable because equity investing was not as widespread in India at the time. The company’s public listing helped establish Reliance as an important name among Indian retail investors.

Shares reportedly opened at around ₹17–₹18 on the first trading day, providing early investors with a substantial gain over the issue price. However, the much larger wealth creation story unfolded over the following decades as the business expanded and the company issued bonus shares.

How ₹1,000 Invested in Reliance in 1977 Grew to Nearly ₹53 Lakh

An investor who purchased 100 Reliance shares at ₹10 each in 1977 would have invested ₹1,000.

Over the years, Reliance issued multiple bonus shares, increasing the number of shares held by long-term investors without requiring additional investment for those bonus shares. Based on the historical bonus issues used in published calculations, the original 100 shares would have grown to 4,096 Reliance shares.

Using the share-price assumptions in the reported calculation, the Reliance Industries holding would be worth approximately ₹48.74 lakh.

The investment also benefited from the demerger of Jio Financial Services in 2023. Eligible Reliance shareholders received one Jio Financial Services share for every Reliance share held on the relevant record date. Under the calculation, the original investment would translate into 2,048 Jio Financial Services shares, valued at approximately ₹4.19 lakh using the assumed market price.

Combining the estimated value of the Reliance Industries and Jio Financial Services holdings brings the total to approximately ₹52.93 lakh.

This calculation  how long-term share-price growth and corporate actions can substantially increase the value of an investment. The estimate depends on the share prices and assumptions used and does not include all possible dividend income or returns from reinvesting dividends.

Can Jio Platforms Repeat Reliance’s Wealth-Creation Story?

The Reliance example naturally raises the question of whether Jio Platforms could deliver comparable long-term returns for its shareholders. However, the two situations should not be treated as equivalent.

Reliance’s historical return reflects decades of business expansion, multiple bonus issues, share-price appreciation and the Jio Financial Services demerger. A new IPO investor cannot assume that the same sequence of events or level of returns will occur with Jio Platforms.

Jio Platforms operates in telecommunications and digital services, with opportunities in areas such as broadband, enterprise technology, cloud services and artificial intelligence. Its future performance will depend on factors including revenue growth, profitability, competition, capital expenditure, regulation and the valuation at which investors buy the shares.

The IPO’s strong subscription figures demonstrate investor demand, but subscription levels alone cannot establish whether a stock is attractively valued or predict its listing performance.

What Investors Should Watch Ahead of the Jio IPO Listing

Investors tracking Jio Platforms should focus on the official listing price, the company’s financial performance, its debt and investment plans, and its ability to convert growth opportunities into sustainable profits.

It is also important to distinguish between short-term listing gains and long-term investment returns. A strong IPO subscription can be followed by volatile trading, and shares may rise or fall after listing.

The Reliance example is a useful reminder of the potential impact of long-term investing and corporate actions. It is not a guarantee that an investment in Jio Platforms will produce similar results.
