Shubman Gill achieved a major milestone by scoring a half-century on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies on Friday. Gill equaled Sunil Gavaskar's 47-year-old record.

Shubman Gill scored 50 runs in 100 balls with the help of five fours at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He added 98 runs for the third wicket with KL Rahul. Rahul was dismissed by West Indies captain Roston Chase. Gill tried to play a reverse sweep shot off Chase's bowling and was caught by Greaves at first slip.

Gill's Achievement

Shubman Gill scored a half-century in his first home Test as captain. He equaled Gavaskar's record, who had scored 205 runs against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in 1978.

Gill Joins a Special Club

This innings saw Shubman Gill join the ranks of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sourav Ganguly. The 26-year-old became the fourth Indian captain to score a half-century in his first Test, both domestic and away.

Gill made his captaincy debut against England in Leeds on June 20, 2025, scoring 147 in the first innings. He then scored 50 as captain in his first home Test against the West Indies.

Vijay Hazare: The First Player

Vijay Hazare was the first Indian captain to reach the 50-run mark in his first Test, both domestic and away. He scored an unbeaten 164 against England in Delhi in December 1951. He scored 89 runs against England at Leeds in June 1952.

Gavaskar scored 116 runs in his first overseas Test as captain. He achieved this feat against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976. He then scored 205 runs against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in December 1978.

Sourav Ganguly played his first overseas Test as captain against Bangladesh in Dhaka in November 2000, scoring 84 runs. He also scored an unbeaten 65 against Zimbabwe in Delhi in November 2000.
