India’s largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has made a major prediction about the future of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. TCS Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated that within the next three years, the number of AI agents working within the company could equal the number of human employees.
The statement, made during TCS’s 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM), signals a major transformation in the global IT industry and highlights how rapidly AI is becoming central to enterprise operations and business growth.
AI Agents to Work Alongside Human Employees
According to Chandrasekaran, TCS is aggressively investing in AI-powered systems across internal operations, customer solutions, and enterprise platforms.
He said the company is preparing for a future where AI agents and human employees will work side by side across multiple business functions.
The TCS chairman emphasized that AI is no longer just an experimental technology but has become a strategic business engine capable of reshaping the entire IT ecosystem.
TCS AI Revenue Sees Massive Growth
TCS’s AI business has already begun generating substantial revenue growth.
Chandrasekaran revealed that:
The company has recorded more than 22% quarterly growth in AI revenue over the last four quarters.
TCS’s annual AI revenue reached approximately $2.5 billion by the end of FY2026.
The company’s Total Contract Value (TCV) crossed $40.7 billion during the financial year.
Financially, TCS also delivered strong overall performance:
Consolidated revenue rose 4.6% to ₹2.67 lakh crore.
Net profit increased 8.8% to ₹52,820 crore.
These figures underline how AI adoption is becoming a key growth driver for the company.
Is AI a Threat to Jobs? TCS Says No
Amid rising global concerns about AI replacing jobs, Chandrasekaran dismissed fears that AI would destroy the IT sector.
Instead, he described AI as “the biggest opportunity yet for enterprise IT.”
He outlined five major opportunities that AI is creating for IT companies worldwide:
1. Modernization of Legacy Systems
AI can help companies modernize outdated infrastructure and fragmented data systems more efficiently.
2. AI-Powered Business Processes
Organizations are redesigning core business functions such as supply chains, customer service, and operations using end-to-end AI systems.
3. AI Governance and Security
Companies now require strong governance systems to manage AI security, compliance, and operational costs.
4. Rise of Sovereign AI
Governments and highly regulated industries increasingly want complete control over their own AI systems and data infrastructure. TCS has already launched dedicated Sovereign AI initiatives in India and Europe.
5. Growth of Physical AI and Robotics
TCS is also focusing on AI-driven robotics for industrial applications. Chandrasekaran cited the example of a four-legged AI-powered robot being used to monitor hazardous warehouse conditions at a global agricultural company.
Trust and Context Will Be the Most Valuable Assets
According to Chandrasekaran, the future AI race will not be decided solely by AI models or computing power.
He stressed that “context and trust” will become the most valuable assets in enterprise AI adoption.
With decades of client relationships, regulatory expertise, and domain knowledge, TCS believes it is well-positioned to lead the next phase of the AI revolution.
Experts believe that as AI technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, companies across sectors will rapidly increase technology spending over the next two years.
TCS Responds to Nashik BPO Allegations
During the AGM, Chandrasekaran also addressed the ongoing Nashik BPO controversy involving allegations of harassment.
He stated that no formal complaint had been received so far regarding the alleged incidents at the Nashik facility.
According to him:
TCS has initiated an internal review of procedural lapses in its Prevention of Harassment (POSH) system.
Employees at the Nashik unit will be given opportunities to speak with investigators.
The company will strengthen processes if procedural failures are identified.
Strict action will be taken if employee misconduct is established.
Chandrasekaran declined to comment further on the matter, stating that the case is currently sub judice.
AI Set to Redefine the Future of IT
TCS’s latest vision reflects a broader shift happening across the global technology industry. AI is increasingly moving from experimental tools to core business infrastructure capable of transforming productivity, automation, customer service, and software development.
As one of India’s largest employers and technology exporters, TCS’s aggressive AI strategy could influence how the entire IT industry adapts to the next wave of technological disruption.
