India said in the United Nations, we have sent more than 40 thousand metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan so far

India has so far shipped over 40,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan, ensuring its status as Kabul's immediate neighbor and long-standing partner. Ruchira Kamboj, the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in the United Nations Security Council, highlighted the historical and civilizational ties with the Afghan people.

 

Ruchira Kamboj said, “As we have repeatedly stated in the Security Council, India as a close neighbor always tries to ensure the return of peace and stability in Afghanistan. We have strong historical and civilizational ties with the Afghan people.

India sent medical consignment to Afghanistan

 

Speaking about the humanitarian need of the Afghan people, the Permanent Representative of the United Nations said that India has sent several shipments of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

 

"India has sent several shipments of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in response to the humanitarian need of the Afghan people as well as urgent appeals made by the United Nations," he said.

 

This includes 32 tonnes of medical aid in 10 batches, including essential life-saving drugs, anti-TB drugs, and 50,0000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

 

These medical consignments have been handed over to the World Health Organization and the Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital in Kabul.

 

Ruchira Kamboj further said, 'India has also sent more than 40,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan so far. To ensure fair and equitable distribution of India's wheat assistance, the Government of India has signed an agreement with the United Nations World Food Program for the distribution of wheat within Afghanistan.'

 

Indian technical team deployed at Indian Embassy

 

An Indian technical team has also been deployed at the Indian Embassy in Kabul to closely monitor and coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders for the effective delivery of humanitarian aid and to continue our engagement with the Afghans.

 

Concerns expressed over Afghanistan's development

 

India reiterated its commitment that humanitarian aid should be based on neutrality, impartiality, and independence. India also expressed concern over the development of Afghanistan which directly affects the well-being of women and girls.

 

Taliban formed an interim government in September

 

The Taliban entered Kabul on August 15 last year, forcing the US-backed government to step down. Later in September, the organization announced the formation of Afghanistan's new interim government.

 

The country is currently grappling with a deepening economic, humanitarian, and security crisis following the takeover of the Taliban. The international community, from governments to non-governmental organizations, has been providing various aid to the Afghan people.
