Root scored his 8th overall and third consecutive Test century against India. He equaled the record of Steve Smith, Ricky Ponting, Vivian Richards, and Gary Sobers for most centuries against India. Root has become the batsman to score the most centuries in the Test between India and England. He broke the records of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Alastair Cook. All three had scored 7 centuries against each other.
It was Root's 12th century for England as Test captain. He also equaled Cook's record in this matter. Root has scored 6 centuries in 2021. He is the third batsman from England to do so. Earlier Dennis Compton had achieved this feat in 1947 and Michael Vaughan in 2002.
A score of 50+ for the fourth time in this series
In this series, Root scored 50+ runs for the fourth time in a row. He has scored 5 consecutive 50+ runs against India in England. He had earlier scored 125 runs in the second innings of the Kennington Oval Test in 2018, 64 and 109 in the first Test (Nottingham) of this series (2021), and 180 runs at Lord's.
Root holds the record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year as an English captain. In this case, Root broke the record of former cricketer Alastair Cook. Cook had scored 1364 runs in a calendar year in 2015. Routes have overtaken this in 2021.
Hameed and Burns batted brilliantly
