Oommen Chandy: Former Kerala Chief Minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy passed away, was ill for a long time

Former Kerala Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy has passed away. Along with his family, Kerala Congress President K.K. Sudhakaran gave this information on Tuesday. He was 79 years old. Oommen Chandy was ill for a long time.

 

Sudhakaran tweeted that the story of a king who conquered the world with the power of love has a touching ending. I am deeply saddened by the demise of a legend Oommen Chandy. He impacted the lives of countless individuals and his legacy will forever resonate in our souls.

 

At the same time, Congress Kerala said that Chandy was not keeping well for a long time and was staying in Bengaluru for treatment. Chandi is loved by all generations and all classes. Congress Kerala tweeted that it is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our dearest leader and former CM Oommen Chandy. Oommen Chandy was one of the most popular and liberal leaders of Kerala. People of all classes liked Chandy Sir. The Congress Parivar will miss his leadership and contribution.

 

The political journey of Oommen Chandy

Oommen Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala twice, from 2004–06 and 2011–16. The veteran Congress leader began his tenure as an MLA by winning the 1970 state assembly elections at the age of 27. After this, he won 11 consecutive elections. Chandy represented only his home constituency Puthuppally in the last five decades.

 

In the year 2022, he became the longest-serving member of the state assembly by representing the Puthupalli constituency in the House for 18,728 days. He had left behind the record of the late KM Mani, former supremo of Kerala Congress (M). Chandy has served four times as a minister in different governments and four times as Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly during his political career.
