Amidst the ongoing tension with Canada, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that the governments of India and Canada will have to talk to each other. They have to see how they resolve their differences over the death of a Khalistani separatist. He stressed that the bigger issue should be identified and worked on.
Speaking to Indian journalists, he said India is ready to look into information related to Canada's allegations of possible involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. He said the issue is that Canadians have made some allegations. We have told them that this is not the policy of the Government of India, but if they are ready to share important and relevant information with us, we are also ready to look into it. At present, this is the whole matter.
But what we don't want to see is an incident that is viewed in isolation, he said. In such a situation it does not present the correct picture. Jaishankar said that there have been many problems with Canada and its government for the last few years. The problem lies with their inclination towards terrorism and separatism. Apart from this, we are also concerned about their consent regarding ballots.
Canada was scolded
He said that their inclination towards violent people and those who commit violent incidents is also proved by the fact that some important extradition requests were not responded to by them. It contains individuals and organizations who are involved in violence and illegal activities in India. He goes around announcing this. I mean it's no secret and they are continuing their activities in Canada.
He said there are many problems there. So I think in case of individual incidents the respective governments will have to talk to each other and see how they proceed with this. I think it's important to talk about the bigger issue. The bigger issue is the inclination I talked about.
Our people are being threatened in Canada
He said he discussed the ongoing diplomatic dispute between India and Canada with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. He also said that the most important fact is that our diplomatic missions and our diplomatic personnel are increasingly being threatened in Canada to such an extent that it is not safe for them to do their jobs today.
Visa operations had to be temporarily suspended
Jaishankar said that the fact is that we had to temporarily suspend our visa operations. This is not something we would like to do. It's just that they have made it very difficult for us to operate those services. Earlier in the day, Blinken told reporters he hoped the issue would be resolved by Canada and India.
What is the matter?
Tension has increased between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged the possible involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar on his country's soil. India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020. India had rejected these allegations as absurd and politically motivated.
