
The fourth edition of the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue began on Wednesday. This dialogue will run till 25 November in New Delhi. It is an apex-level international annual gathering of the Indian Navy and marks the premier expression of naval engagement at the strategic level. Meanwhile, Navy Chief Admiral R.K. Hari Kumar said that India is geographically privileged in the Indo-Pacific and has been an active contributor to the overall development and prosperity of the region.
Earlier, the Defense Ministry said that the theme of Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2022 is 'Operation of Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative (IPOI)'. This was discussed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Bangkok on 04 November 2019.
This dialogue is mutually centered on the seven pillars. These include maritime security, marine ecology, marine resources, disaster risk reduction, and management, trade-connectivity and maritime transport, capacity-building and resource sharing, and science, technology, and academic cooperation.
IPRD-2022 will have six sessions:-
Weaving Composite Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific: Multilateral Options.
The construction of composite-security bridges in the western and eastern sea expanses of the Indo-Pacific.
Building maritime connectivity: Ports, trade and transport, capacity-building and capacity enhancement leveraging physical and social sciences.
Pragmatic Approach to Regional Blue Economy.
Disaster risk reduction and management.
Solutions for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Vulnerable Coastal States.
In addition, there will be an inaugural session and a guidance session which will be addressed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav. National Maritime Foundation (NMF) is the Knowledge Partner of the Navy and the main organizer of each event edition. The first two editions of IPRD were held in New Delhi in 2018 and 2019 respectively. However, IPRD 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19. The third edition of IPRD took place in 2021 through online mode. Each successive edition of the IPRD aims to review both the opportunities and challenges arising within the Indo-Pacific.
