IPL 2023: Delhi-Kolkata captain out, then Punjab in a new avatar; Know the weakness and strength of these five teams

The 16th season of IPL is starting on Friday (31st March). In the opening match, the teams of Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans will be face to face. Mumbai Indians have won the maximum five titles in 15 seasons of the tournament. At the same time, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, participating in the tournament this time, are yet to get a chance to lift the trophy. This will be the second season of Lucknow Super Giants. He had made it to the playoffs last year, but the team was far from the title.

Delhi capitals

This team is yet to win the IPL trophy and will try its best to win the title this time. The coach of the team is Ricky Ponting, who has made his Australian team the world champion many times.

Strengths: Both the team's batting and bowling are strong. The team has David Warner and Mitchell Marsh as the opening pair who can smash any bowling. In bowling, fast bowler Enrich Nortje and spinner Kuldeep Yadav do not allow any batsman to freeze easily.

Weakness: Injured Rishabh Pant is not playing this season and will be replaced by Warner. It is difficult for Delhi to fill Pant's place, but it is expected that wicket-keeper batsman Sarfaraz Khan can play in his place.

X-Factor: Mitchell Marsh is in tremendous form. He played flamboyant innings in the recently concluded ODI series against India. Marsh will be responsible for getting the team off to a great start.

Kolkata Knight Riders

For nine years this team is waiting for its IPL trophy. Kolkata last won this title in 2014. By the way, this team has won this trophy twice.

Strength: The team has good all-rounders like Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan, and Sunil Narine who provide strength to the team. Apart from this, there are bowlers like Varun Chakraborty, Lockie Ferguson, and Tim Southee in bowling against whom it is not easy to score runs.

Weakness: Shreyas Iyer is not playing due to injury and Nitish Rana will captain the team in his place. Along with the captaincy, the onus will be on Rana to perform for the team with the bat as well. Apart from this, there is a lack of consistency in the batting of this team.

X-Factor: David Vese is a medium pace fast bowler and an aggressive batsman. He has played for Namibia and South Africa. Apart from this, he plays in many foreign leagues and makes the team win on important occasions. Kolkata would be hoping for a good performance from him.

Punjab Kings

Under the leadership of captain Shikhar Dhawan, the team would like to win their first title. In the last four seasons, the team has failed to reach above the sixth position. The team will once again be seen in a new avatar. KL Rahul was the captain of the team in 2021 and Mayank Agarwal in 2022. This time the command is in the hands of Shikhar Dhawan.

Strength: Batsmen like opener Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Liam Livingstone provides strength to the team. Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has shown glimpses of his talent. It is not easy to score runs against him. Kagiso Rabada is also known for taking early wickets.

Weakness: The team does not have many foreign players which can harm them. The team may also miss a good finisher.

X-Factor: English all-rounder Sam Karan can prove to be the X-factor of the team. He has won matches for his old team Chennai Super Kings from bowling to batting.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

The team is looking for its first title. The team made Faf Duplessis the captain in place of Kohli but the trophy was still not achieved.

Strengths: This team is very strong on paper. In batting, the team has strong players in T20 cricket. Faf Duplessis, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Dinesh Karthik are included who have the power to smash any bowling unit. Fast bowlers Harshal Patel, and Mohammad Siraj are the important bowlers of the team.

Weakness: Faf Duplessis will not only have the responsibility of getting the title to the team but will also have to excel in batting. There is a lack of consistency in the batting of the team, which may have to suffer. The team has also suffered a setback due to Rajat Patidar's injury.

X-Factor: Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga can change the course of the match at any time. His spin bowling and aggressive batting have created headaches for all teams.

Sunrise Hyderabad

The last time the team won the title was in 2016. The team finished eighth in 2021 and 2022. This time the team would like to improve its performance.

Strength: The franchise has appointed Aiden Markram as the captain this time. He is a South African batsman who is in great form. Aggressive batsmen like Heinrich Klaasen and Rahul Tripathi are also on the team. Good bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik, and Adil Rashid are also present in the team.

Weakness: The team's performance in important matches has not been good. When the team's batsmen perform, the bowlers get thrashed. The team management will try to get rid of this problem.

X-Factor: Markram did well in the T20I series that ended against the West Indies. He played an unbeaten inning of 35 runs in 18 balls in the last match and also took a wicket. He also bowls off-spin.
