Joshimath Sinking: Cabinet Secretary reviews the situation in Joshimath, relief work continues vigorously

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, reviewed the situation in Joshimath, Uttarakhand on Tuesday, where the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand apprised the NCMC of the prevailing situation. He said residents of severely damaged houses were being shifted to safer places.

 

Explain that relief sites have been identified at Joshimath and Pipalkoti to accommodate the affected families. Appropriate arrangements for compensation and relief have been made by the state government. At present, the operation of the Joshimath-Auli ropeway has been stopped. Construction works in and around the Joshimath Municipality area have also been stopped.

 

Disaster Management Force engaged in relief work

NDRF and SDRF are assisting the district administration in relief and rehabilitation efforts. Member Secretary, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) informed the Committee that teams of experts from CBRI, GSI, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, NIDM, and National Institute of Hydrology visited the affected areas on 6 and 7 January 2023 to assess the situation. Visited. The team also interacted with the district administration to understand their requirements. Apart from this, a high-level central team from the Ministry of Home Affairs is also in Joshimath to assess the situation.

The Cabinet Secretary said that it is of paramount importance to safely evacuate all the residents in the immediately affected area. Apart from this, the weak buildings-constructions should be removed safely. In addition, all geotechnical, geophysical, and hydrological studies and tests should be completed in a coordinated and time-bound manner. The Cabinet Secretary assured the Chief Secretary that all central agencies would be available for necessary assistance. The meeting was attended by Central and State administrative officials as well as representatives of the Army, scientific organizations, and various government organizations.
