The hijab controversy has once again started heating up in Karnataka. Some students of Mangaluru University on Monday approached the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district and sought permission to wear an Islamic headscarf or hijab on the university campus. 12 Muslim girl students also reached the university college on Monday wearing hijabs.

All of them on Saturday again demanded the wearing of hijab inside educational institutions. Due to the implementation of the dress code for the students, the university authority did not allow these girl students to enter the university on Monday as well as on Saturday. When asked to go to the Deputy Commissioner of the district, three girl students went to meet him and submitted a memorandum.

,

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rajendra KV said that the college authorities denied admission to the girl students due to the university's decision not to come wearing disturbing clothes like hijab or saffron scarf. Recently, the High Court in its judgment had held that the hijab is not a necessary religious practice and the dress code should be followed in the college.

Dr. Rajendra said that some girl students who were upset with the order of the university had come to him. Told them that they cannot challenge the decision of the university members at the district level and they are bound to obey the orders of the university. He asked them to consider the legal aspects. He has also been asked to maintain peace on the college campus.

At the same time, the girl students say that this order is for pre-university colleges and not for degree colleges. A student said that we have submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner for review of the dress code and appealed to him to resolve the matter.

This issue is going on for one and a half weeks but it did not get any publicity because we want to solve this matter legally but it has got publicity due to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Referring to a WhatsApp chat in a group of students, he claimed that students belonging to the Vidyarthi Parishad had asked Hindus to come to the college on May 24 wearing saffron shawls.

The university is bound to obey the order of the government and the court

The University is bound to abide by the orders of the High Court and the State Government. If any student has any problem in following it then he will try his best to solve it. - P. Subrahmanyam Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Mangaluru University
