Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has expressed displeasure over the postponement of municipal elections by the Election Commission in Delhi and the arguments given behind it. He has also accused the Election Commission of bowing before the central government. The Chief Minister has also accused the Center of deliberately weakening the institutions by holding a press conference on Friday.
Initiating the press conference, Kejriwal said, "Municipal corporation elections were to be held in Delhi, regarding which the State Election Commission had issued a press invite on March 9 in the morning till 5.00 pm, the commission will announce the dates of the elections. The same evening, an hour ago at 4 pm, the Center wrote a letter to the Election Commission that we want to unite the three corporations of Delhi, so postpone the elections today.
Kejriwal alleges that after this the Election Commission announced the postponement of the MCD elections. Perhaps this would have happened for the first time in the country's 75-year history that the central government would have directly asked the election commission of a state to postpone the elections.
Integration of corporations is an excuse, BJP is scared of the AAP wave
Kejriwal asked that the BJP-ruled government has been at the Center for the past eight years and if he had to merge all the three corporations into one, then why didn't he do it earlier. Why was this done just before the election dates were announced? He says that the integration of corporations is an excuse, the purpose was to postpone the election because BJP feels that there is an AAP wave in Delhi in which BJP will be swept away and MCD will lose the election.
CM Kejriwal said people are saying what is the need to postpone the elections to unite the three municipal corporations. Now there are three corporations, so the councilors and mayors of all three sit separately. If all three become one, then after the election they will sit together and till all the three corporations are united, they will continue to sit separately as per the old system. What is the need to stop the election in this? But the motive is not to unite the corporations but to postpone the elections.
