Team India vice-captain KL Rahul has opened up about his preparation and approach ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, highlighting the importance of discipline, experience and making the most of opportunities.
In a special BCCI interview titled ‘Turning Up Ft. KL Rahul’, the experienced batter explained that preparation and trust in one's process are essential for succeeding in international cricket. Rahul also emphasized the importance of understanding one's role and remaining prepared for different match situations.
KL Rahul Scores 82 After Retiring Hurt
Rahul recently produced a determined performance against Sri Lanka, scoring 82 runs in the first innings.
The right-handed batter had to retire hurt after reaching 77 on the opening day because of cramps. However, he returned on the second day and completed his innings, facing 175 balls and hitting 10 fours and a six before being dismissed after a catch at short leg.
His innings once again highlighted the value of Rahul's experience in challenging overseas conditions.
Preparation and Trust in the Process Are Key
Speaking about his approach, Rahul said that preparation begins well before a match. He believes players must focus on the basics while remaining ready to deal with different situations that can arise during international cricket.
For Rahul, having confidence in one's preparation is equally important. A long international career brings experience, but maintaining the right mindset and trusting the process remain crucial to consistent performances.
Rahul Wants to Use His Experience for Team India
As one of India's senior players, Rahul believes his experience can benefit the entire squad.
Playing in Sri Lanka requires batters to quickly assess the pitch, weather and conditions before adapting their approach. Rahul's previous experience in Sri Lankan conditions could therefore prove valuable to India's younger players.
The vice-captain also emphasized that his responsibility extends beyond his individual batting performance. Sharing knowledge with younger teammates and contributing to a positive dressing-room environment are also important aspects of his role.
India Looks to Balance Youth and Experience
Rahul also spoke about the atmosphere within the Indian dressing room, describing the squad as a combination of experience and youthful energy.
The players are reportedly preparing with a clear understanding of their individual responsibilities. Rahul believes that every player must be ready to capitalize when an opportunity arrives and adjust their approach according to the match situation.
KL Rahul's Message Ahead of the Sri Lanka Tests
Rahul's approach can be summed up through three key principles:
Prepare thoroughly for different match situations.
Trust the process and remain disciplined.
Use experience effectively while helping younger players.
For India, Rahul's experience could become particularly important in Sri Lankan conditions, where adapting quickly to the pitch and opposition bowling attack can make a significant difference.
