About 1,100 mild earthquakes have been felt in less than 48 hours on one of Portugal's mid-Atlantic volcanic islands. Experts have termed these earthquake tremors as an earthquake crisis and officials are busy making emergency plans.
Rui Marx, head of CIVISA's earthquake-volcano monitoring center for the Azores archipelago, said on Monday that tremors of 1.9 to 3.3 magnitude were recorded on the island of Sao Jorge since Saturday afternoon. He said that most of the earthquakes that have not caused any damage so far have been reported along the volcanic rift of the island of Manadas.
8400 people live on this island
This volcano was last active in 1808. So Jorge is also one of the nine islands that make up the Azores Archipelago. The island is inhabited by 8,400 people and is part of the central group of the archipelago.
Reminds me of the earthquake that hit Spain's La Palma island
The sudden increase in seismic activity is reminiscent of the earthquake detected last year before the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on Spain's La Palma island, about 1,400 kilometers (870 mi) southeast of the Azores. That volcanic eruption destroyed thousands of properties and crops in 85 days.
What do the tremors of frequent earthquakes indicate?
However, CIVICA has not yet told what the recurrent earthquake tremors indicate. Marx pointed out that it is still not possible to know the behavioral patterns of this seismic crisis.
Teams were sent to the ground level to measure soil gases
CIVICA has sent teams to the ground level to set up two additional seismic monitoring stations on the island and measure soil gases, an indicator of volcanic activity.
