The main principle of Jainism is to gain control over the senses and Lord Mahavira achieved victory over his senses after about 12 years of severe penance. On the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, the people of Jain society organize Prabhat Pheri, rituals, and other spiritual programs. Also, on this special day, water is offered to the statue of Lord Mahavir from a gold or silver urn, and his teachings are listened to with full devotion.

Lord Mahavir had given five main principles for the upliftment of man, which are also known as Panchsheel Siddhanta. Those principles are- Satya, Ahimsa, Asteya, Aparigraha, and Brahmacharya. Truth and non-violence is the first duty of man. On the other hand, asteya means not stealing, one attains spiritual peace and salvation.
