When the month of March started, there was a slight cold left, but around Holi, the mercury suddenly started skyrocketing. It has been so hot in March that the record of 121 years has been broken. Ever since the weather records are being kept in India, there has never been so much heat in March.
Apart from the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi in North India, the heat of summer has also been felt in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The surprising thing is that even in the coastal areas and the foothills of Himachal, the temperature remains much above average.
We have talked to RK Jenamani, Senior Scientist of the Meteorological Department, and Mahesh Palawat, Weather Expert of Skymet about the scorching heat. He says that such a rise in temperature in March is not a normal phenomenon. It is very strange to have such dry weather in March. We have asked experts to understand the cause of this unusual heat and the future predictions.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also confirmed that after 1901, so far the month of March has not seen such a temperature. The maximum average temperature of 33.10 degrees Celsius has been registered in the country in March 2022. At the same time, in March 2010, the maximum average temperature was 33.09 °C.
Mahesh Palawat, Vice President, Skymet, a weather information organization, says, “This has been the fourth warmest month of March for Delhi so far. The average minimum temperature in the last 10 years has also been the highest in Delhi at 17.6, this also shows extreme weather conditions.
RK Jenamani, Senior Scientist, Meteorological Department, says, “When the maximum temperature exceeds 6.5 degrees Celsius above the normal temperature, then it is considered a severe heatwave. At the same time, when it is more than 4.5 ° C, it comes in the category of a heatwave.
Just a day ago we have recorded 42-43 degrees Celsius temperature in Rajasthan, Delhi, South Haryana. Whereas the temperature of these areas usually remains 36-37 degrees. It is clear that a severe heatwave is going on in these areas and it is also historic.
What are the reasons behind the warming earth?
Mahesh Palawat of Skymet believes that usually due to the Western Disturbance (Western Disturbance - winds coming from the west), there is little moisture in the weather of March, but this time the winds coming from Pakistan are very dry (dry). Stayed. Due to this, the temperature has increased significantly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana. There is no significant effect of El-Nino or La-Nino behind this heat.
IMD Senior Scientist RK Jenaman says that when the winds coming from Pakistan passed through the desert of Rajasthan, they became completely dry and when these dry winds progressed, due to this the temperature went much above normal. This type of incident is seen for many years.
We asked the experts whether climate change and global warming could also be behind the increase in the heat this year? On this Mahesh, Palawat says 'We have seen that the temperature of the earth has increased continuously in the last years and due to climate change the earth is continuously warming, there is no doubt about it. But climate change is behind the increase in temperature in March, it cannot be said.
At the same time, a scientist of the Meteorological Department, Janamani said, "We will do a data study on the role of climate change behind the unusual heat in March."
Which areas are most affected by the heat?
States like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi have been the most affected by the heatwave. These states have recorded much higher than normal temperatures in March. The Meteorological Department has told on 4 April that the temperature remains between 41-43 degrees Celsius in West Rajasthan, North East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, North Gujarat, and Marathwada.
The rest of MP, UP, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Jharkhand, Orissa, and Telangana has recorded a temperature of 40-42 degree Celsius. Temperatures are running 6-8 degrees Celsius above normal in many areas of Jammu and Himachal.
What is the estimate for April?
Skymet has predicted that similar heatwave conditions will continue in the coming 10-15 days as the weather is not showing much change. At the same time, the scientists of the Meteorological Department also estimate that till April 15, the heat will remain the same. There is no chance of rain for the next two weeks and the heat is expected to increase continuously.
