Rohit Sharma made a spectacular return to cricketing action with a blistering innings in the second match of IPL 2026, played against KKR. By playing a rapid-fire innings against KKR, he provided his team with a solid start, enabling them to successfully chase down the highest-ever total recorded at the Wankhede Stadium in IPL history.

 

 

Against KKR, Rohit completed his half-century in just 23 balls—marking his fastest fifty in the history of the IPL. His innings saw him score 78 runs off 38 balls at a strike rate of 205. Powered by this innings, he shattered several records.

Rohit Sharma Breaks These 6 Major Records:

Became the second batsman to score 2,500+ IPL runs at a single venue (2,529 runs at the Wankhede Stadium).

Set the record for the most runs scored against a single opposition team in IPL history (1,161 runs against KKR). In doing so, he surpassed Virat Kohli, who had scored 1,159 runs against the Punjab Kings.

Became the first batsman to score 1,000+ runs in MI vs KKR matches in the IPL (1,016 runs against KKR).

Became the fourth batsman in the IPL to register a score of 50 or more (50+) on 50 separate occasions (completing his 50th 50+ score).

Recorded the highest opening partnership for Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium (145* runs alongside Ricketon against KKR).

Became the first Asian batsman to hit 550+ sixes in T20 cricket (550 sixes across 451 innings).

 

 

MI vs KKR: KKR Defeated by 6 Wickets

Powered by half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets. With this victory, Mumbai won their first match of an IPL season after a gap of 14 years; prior to this, their last opening-match victory came in 2012 against the Chennai Super Kings. Batting first in this match, the Kolkata Knight Riders posted a massive total of 220 runs within their allotted 20 overs.

 

 

For Kolkata, Captain Ajinkya Rahane played an innings of 67 runs off 40 balls, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored 51 runs off 29 balls. Chasing a target of 221 runs, Mumbai successfully achieved it in 19.1 overs with the loss of 4 wickets.
