Moderate voting in Sikkim

Gangtok, April 12 (IANS) Moderate voting was seen in Sikkim for the state's lone Lok Sabha seat Saturday, an official said, adding around 12 percent of the electorate had voted in the first two hours.

"Till 9 a.m., we recorded 12 percent voting," an official of the chief electoral office told IANS.

The official said the voter turnout was enthusiastic in most of the 538 polling stations and that it is expected to pick up as the day progresses.

ASikkim has an electorate of 362,326, of whom 175,549 or 48.45 percent, are women.

As many as 3,228 poll officials have been deployed.

Six candidates are in the fray. Sitting MP Prem Das Rai of the Sikkim Democratic Front is re-contesting, while Akar Dhoj Limbu (Congress), Nar Bahadur Khatiwara (Bharatiya Janata Party) and Kaushal Rai (Aam Aadmi Party) are hoping to give him a fight.
