Regarding Nagpur violence, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that it seems that this violence was planned. Speaking on the Nagpur issue in the Assembly, CM Fadnavis said that 'attack on police will not be tolerated at all. Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal demonstrated, after which rumors spread that religious material was burnt. It seems that this was a planned violence, but no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands.' The CM said that 'Chhava film has provoked people's anger against Aurangzeb, but everyone should maintain peace in the state.'
More than 50 were detained and five FIRs registered
Police Commissioner Ravindra Singhal said on Tuesday that more than 50 people have been detained and five FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence in Nagpur city. Violence broke out in central Nagpur on Monday evening, in which stones were pelted at the police. Rumors spread that the holy book was burnt during a protest organized by a right-wing organization to remove the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district).
Nagpur in-charge minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the atmosphere was vitiated through social media and appealed to the opposition not to politicize the issue. Bawankule, who held a review meeting with the police commissioner and district collector, also appealed to members of all communities to maintain harmony. "There was no lapse on the part of the home department. The police stood as a shield between the Hindu and Muslim communities (during the violence), in which several policemen were injured," he said. Bawankule said the situation is a bit tense at the moment but there is peace in the city as adequate police force has been deployed.
'Won't tolerate those who support Aurangzeb'
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on Nagpur violence said "Those who support Aurangzeb will not be tolerated in Maharashtra. He said that the incident that happened in Nagpur was unfortunate. Police are investigating whether it was a well-planned conspiracy or not. Four DCP-level officers were injured in the violence. CM is reviewing the incident. Police say that many people came from outside. Petrol bombs were thrown. The incident of the attack on police is unfortunate. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. I appeal to the people to maintain peace.
