Indian Navy has successfully tested BrahMos from its ship in the Arabian Sea. BrahMos missile with a DRDO-designed booster carried out a precision strike on a target in the Arabian Sea. The missile was tested from the Battleship of Kolkata. BrahMos Aerospace is continuously working on increasing indigenous content in the missile.

BrahMos missile was successfully tested 2 months ago from Sukhoi

The Indian Airforce successfully test-fired the BrahMos air-launched missile in the Bay of Bengal in December 2022. It can target targets up to 400 km away. The Air Force said in its official statement – This missile was tested by Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft. The Defense Department said that during the test, the missile hit the target ship in the middle. It is the anti-ship version of the air-launched version of the missile.

How did BrahMos get its name?

BrahMos has been developed under a joint agreement between India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia's Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPOM. BrahMos is a medium-range stealth ramjet supersonic cruise missile. This missile can be launched from a ship, submarine, aircraft, or land.

According to Defense Department officials, BrahMos is named after the mighty weapon of Lord Brahma, the Brahmastra. However, some reports have also claimed that the missile has been named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva River of Russia. It is believed to be the fastest in the world as an anti-ship cruise missile.

BrahMos at a glance

BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile, which can be launched from a submarine, ship, aircraft, or land.

BrahMos is based on Russia's P-800 Oceanic cruise missile technology. This missile has been handed over to all three wings of the Indian Army, Army, Navy, and Airforce.

Several versions of the BrahMos missile exist. Land-launched, ship-launched, and submarine-launched air-launched versions of BrahMos have been tested.

BrahMos can destroy its target at a speed of Mach 2 speed (2500 km / h) at a range of 290 km when fired from land or sea.

The BrahMos missile can be launched from a submarine from a depth of 40-50 meters from inside the water. The submarine-launched BrahMos missile was tested in 2013.

What is the difference between cruise and ballistic missiles?

A missile is a guided aerial range weapon capable of self-propelled flight, usually powered by a jet engine or rocket motor. Missiles are also called guided missiles or guided rockets. Simply put, a missile means throwing, burning, or sending an explosive toward a target. There are broadly two types of missiles. Cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

cruise missile

A cruise missile is a type of unmanned self-guided missile. These missiles fly very close to the ground like high-speed planes. For this, route markings are fed into their navigation systems. That is why they have been named cruise missiles.

It flies within the Earth's atmosphere with the help of jet engine technology. Their speed is very fast.

Cruise missiles can be divided into subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic cruise missiles according to their capability. For example, India's BrahMos is a supersonic missile and BrahMos 2 is a hypersonic missile.

The cruise missile flies very low, just 10 meters above the ground. Cruise missiles move parallel to the Earth's surface and their targets are very accurate.

Due to flying at a low altitude, it does not come under the radar. They can be launched from land, air, submarines, and warships.

Cruise missiles are smaller in size than ballistic missiles and carry lighter warheads. Cruise missiles are used for both conventional and nuclear warheads.

ballistic missile

This missile goes up rapidly after being released and then hits its target while coming down rapidly due to gravity.

A ballistic missile is released from a large sea vessel or a special place with resources. India has ballistic missiles named Prithvi, Agni, and Dhanush.

Ballistic missiles are larger than cruise missiles. These missiles can carry heavier warheads than cruise missiles.

After the ballistic missile is released, it follows a crescent-shaped path in the air.

As soon as they lose contact with the rocket, the bomb in them falls to the ground due to gravity.

Once these missiles are released, their path cannot be changed.

Ballistic missiles are typically used to carry nuclear warheads, although they can also carry conventional warheads.

Indian missile fell in Pakistan

On March 9, an Indian missile fell 124 kilometers inside Pakistan near its city Channu Miyan. India says that this happened due to a technical glitch. On the other hand, Pakistan claims that it was a supersonic missile without weapons.

Pakistani military spokesman Major General Babar Iftikhar said in his statement, a high-speed flying object crashed near its city Mian Channu. This object crashed at an altitude of 40 thousand feet and after flying 124 kilometers inside Pakistani airspace at Mach 3 speed.
