Nepal's Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba have won the election from his home district Dhankuta for the 7th time in a row, setting a record for doing so. The PM of the Caretaker Government got 25 thousand 534 votes and defeated his rival Sagar Dhakal who got 13 thousand 42 votes for the post of Member of the House of Representatives. The counting of votes for the parliamentary and provincial elections held in Nepal on November 20 began on Monday. Nepal recorded a low voter turnout of 61 percent for the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly elections held on Sunday.
People hoping for a stable government
Nepali voters are actively participating in the periodic general elections with the hope of "stable government and development". This is the second general election since the promulgation of the constitution in 2015. Nepali voters were somewhat disappointed in the 2017 elections, as the government did not last long.
61 percent polling
According to the Election Commission of Nepal, about 61 percent of voters voted in the parliamentary and provincial elections held on 20 November. Addressing a press conference, Nepal's Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapliya said that this polling percentage is less than the Election Commission's expectation. He said that barring a few incidents of violence, elections were held peacefully throughout the country.
Nepali Congress alliance toward majority
The Nepali Congress-led coalition seems to be inching closer to securing a majority in the parliamentary elections in Nepal. The ruling coalition has won or is leading in about 70 seats. At the same time, the main opposition party CPN-UML has so far won only two seats and is ahead by 40.
