New Zealand defeated England by 1 run in the second Test being played in Wellington. It also became the third team in the world to win after playing the follow-on.

 

Earlier, India defeated Australia in the 2001 Kolkata Test. England has done this feat twice. He defeated Australia after playing the follow-on in 1884 and 1981. That is the incident of winning by playing the follow-on in Test cricket has happened 4 times.

England's first innings: In the Test that started on February 24 in Wellington, New Zealand won the toss and chose to field first. England batting scored 435 runs in 87 overs. Joe Root and Harry Brook scored centuries.

 

New Zealand 1st innings: 209 runs scored. Tim Southee was the highest scorer. He scored 73 runs. Stuart Broad took 4 wickets. Anderson and Leach got 3-3 successes. New Zealand was trailing by 226 runs and in such a situation England called them to follow on.

 

New Zealand 2nd innings: Captain Kane Williamson scored 132 runs. Opener Tom Latham scored 83 and Conway scored 61 runs. Daryl Mitchell (54) and Tom Bundle (90) also scored half-centuries. The total reached 483 runs.

 

England's second innings: The team got a target of 258 runs. Only Joe Root could face the bowlers. He played an inning of 95 runs. The entire team was bundled out for 256 runs and lost the match by 1 run. Neil Wagner took 4 and Saudi took 3 wickets.

 

The last wicket was at the crease, then England needed 7 runs... could not score

 

Ben Foakes, who scored innings of 35 runs, was the 8th England batsman to be dismissed. When he was dismissed in the 72nd over, England's score was 251. 7 runs were needed to win.

 

Wagner comes to bowl the 73rd over. Was the last pair at the crease. Anderson and Leach were in front. Anderson hit a four off the last ball.

 

Now England's score had reached 256 and 2 runs were needed to win. In the 74th over, Saudi hit 3 bouncers and Leach standing in front could not score a single run in 6 balls.

 

Wagner comes to bowl the 75th over. Short ball bowled down the leg side. The ball was very close to the wide but the umpire did not call it a wide ball. The second ball was also on the leg side, which wicketkeeper Bandel made no mistake, taking the edge of Anderson's bat. He took the catch. England lost the match by one run.

England lost 4 wickets inside adding 32 runs on the fifth day. Joe Root and Ben Stokes handled the England innings. There was a 121-run partnership between the two. By lunch, England had scored 168 runs for 5 wickets. Ben Stokes got out on a team score of 201. He scored 33 runs off 116 balls. After his departure, England's seventh wicket fell for 202 runs and Joe Root also returned to the pavilion after scoring 95 runs.
