Following the deaths caused by Coldrif Cough Syrup, the Tamil Nadu government has taken significant action. The license of Srisan Pharmaceutical Company, the company that manufactures the cough syrup, has been revoked. Twenty-two children have died in Madhya Pradesh alone after consuming this cough syrup.
The Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department has taken this strict action against the company. According to the state health department, the company has been formally closed following the completion of an investigation. Coldrif Cough Syrup has shown signs of excessive levels of diethylene glycol (DEG).
Company owner arrested
The Tamil Nadu government has also ordered an investigation of all pharmaceutical companies in the state. Meanwhile, the court has remanded Srisan Company owner Ranganathan to 10 days of police custody. Ranganathan was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 9th.
22 children died in Madhya Pradesh.
The Tamil Nadu government has also suspended two senior drug inspectors. It should be noted that after the deaths of 22 children in Madhya Pradesh, Coldrif cough syrup was banned in several states. The Madhya Pradesh government formed an SIT to investigate the matter. However, the company that manufactures Coldrif cough syrup has its plant in Tamil Nadu.
BJP leader K. Annamalai criticized the Tamil Nadu government for this incident. After the matter escalated, the government suspended the drug inspector. Now, the government has shut down the company and revoked its license.
