The increasing infection of the Nipah virus in Kerala is a cause of serious concern for health experts. So far, the infection has been confirmed in six people here. No new patients have been found in the state for the third consecutive day.
State Health Minister Veena George said it is a big relief for the state that no new positive case of the virus has been reported. At present the situation is under control. He said that the condition of the nine-year-old child is improving. The child has been removed from the ventilator and placed on oxygen support. He also informed that samples of 36 bats have been taken and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune to detect the presence of the virus in bats.
The Health Minister said that 1,233 contacts have been traced so far. Of them, 352 are in the high-risk category. At the same time, as a Nipah precaution, visits to 36,167 houses have been completed to take stock of the situation. He said health workers have intensified containment activities in places where the Nipah virus has been confirmed.
So many cases have come so far
Let us inform you that the total number of cases of Nipah infection in the state is six, out of which two people have died and four people are being treated. Studies by the World Health Organization and ICMR have found that not just Kozhikode but the entire state is suffering from this type of infection.
Given the worsening situation in the state, neighboring states have also been alerted. Health experts have appealed to everyone to avoid unnecessary travel to the affected areas for the time being and keep making efforts to prevent this viral infection.
