One AC for the Entire House? Here’s How Mini-Split Air Conditioning Systems Work

Posted on 25th May 2026 01:00 pm by rohit kumar

Standard split or window ACs designed for home use are capable of cooling only a single room. If your home has multiple rooms, you would typically need to install a separate AC unit for each one. However, very few people are aware that a technology now exists capable of cooling 4–5 rooms in a home using just a single AC unit. This new air conditioning technology is known as the Mini Split AC system. While not yet widespread in India, these ACs are gaining immense popularity in other countries. Let’s explore what this new type of AC is and how it functions.

What is a Mini Split Air Conditioner?

A Mini Split Air Conditioner is also referred to as a ductless AC system. It is an air conditioning system designed to deliver cooling to 4–5 rooms within a home using a single outdoor unit. This setup allows for the installation of multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit. Both the indoor and outdoor units are interconnected via refrigerant lines and electrical wiring. A key advantage of this system is that, unlike traditional centralized AC systems, it does not require the installation of air ducts.

The indoor units are typically mounted on the wall and deliver cooled air directly into the room. If the system consists of only one indoor unit, it is classified as a “Single-Zone System.” Conversely, a “Multi-Zone System” allows for the connection of multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit, enabling the cooling or heating of the entire home.

How Does a Mini Split AC Work?

The operational mechanism of a Mini Split AC is largely similar to that of a standard central air conditioning system. The primary difference lies in how the air is distributed: a central AC system distributes air throughout the house via ducts, whereas a Mini Split AC delivers cooling directly into the specific room.

In this system, the indoor unit houses an evaporator coil and a blower fan, while the outdoor unit contains a compressor, a condenser coil, and a fan. Both units remain connected through copper piping and electrical wiring.

The compressor located in the outdoor unit circulates the refrigerant gas through the piping to the indoor unit. As this refrigerant transitions from a liquid to a gas, it absorbs heat and moisture from the room. Subsequently, the indoor unit releases cool, dehumidified air back into the room.

The gas then flows back to the outdoor unit, where the heat is expelled, and the refrigerant reverts to its liquid state. This process continues in a continuous cycle. If the system is a heat pump, it can also be used to heat the room during the winter months.

What are the key features of a Mini Split AC?

The most significant advantage of a Mini Split AC is its ease of installation. Installing it requires drilling only a small hole in the wall to accommodate the necessary piping and wiring.

These systems offer a variety of indoor unit options. You can select different designs to suit your specific needs and available space. These units can be mounted on a wall, recessed into the ceiling, or installed directly onto the ceiling surface. Wall-mounted units are affixed directly to the wall. Console units are designed for rooms where wall installation is not feasible, while ceiling units are mounted on the ceiling surface. Conversely, in-ceiling units remain completely concealed.

Furthermore, Mini Split ACs are available in various capacities to suit different room sizes. The outdoor unit can be positioned in a location where operational noise is minimized. Their compact design also makes them easy to install in smaller homes or areas with limited space.
