Oracle layoffs are back in the spotlight as the technology giant has initiated another round of job cuts, with affected employees receiving early-morning emails informing them that their roles had been eliminated. The latest layoffs began on Monday, September 14, as part of what the company described in employee notifications as a broader organisational change.
The exact number of employees affected in the latest round has not been disclosed. Reports based on employees' accounts indicate that several workers learned about their job losses through early-morning notifications, with the termination effective the same day.
Oracle Layoffs: Employees Receive 6 AM Job-Cut Emails
According to reporting by Business Insider and other outlets, affected Oracle employees received emails early Monday informing them that their positions were being eliminated.
The notification reportedly stated that Oracle had decided to eliminate the employee's role as part of a “broader organizational change” and that the day of the notification would be the employee's final working day.
Reports also indicate that some employees lost access to company systems before receiving the formal email, including corporate logins and workplace communication tools. The timing has drawn significant attention because of the abrupt nature of the notifications.
Oracle has not publicly announced the number of employees affected by this latest round.
What Did Oracle's Layoff Email Say?
The reported notification told employees that their roles had been eliminated following a review of Oracle's current business requirements.
The email also warned affected workers that access to company computers, email, voicemail and files would be terminated and that they should not download, copy or retain company information.
The message did not provide an individual performance-based explanation for the termination. Instead, the layoffs were presented as part of a broader organisational restructuring.
Oracle Already Cut 21,000 Jobs
The latest layoffs come after a much larger workforce reduction during Oracle's fiscal 2026.
Oracle's workforce fell by approximately 21,000 employees, or 13%, during the fiscal year ended May 31, 2026. The company's employee count declined from roughly 162,000 to 141,000 during the period.
Oracle also reported around $1.84 billion in restructuring and exit costs during fiscal 2026, compared with approximately $374 million in the previous year.
The company had previously linked part of its workforce restructuring to the adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence.
Why Is Oracle Cutting Jobs While Spending Billions on AI?
The latest layoffs come at an unusual moment for Oracle. While the company is reducing its workforce, it is simultaneously making enormous investments in data centres and AI infrastructure.
Oracle spent $28.5 billion in capital expenditure during the first quarter of fiscal 2027, more than three times the $8.5 billion spent during the same period a year earlier. The company has maintained a full-year capital expenditure outlook of approximately $90 billion to $95 billion.
Oracle's AI-cloud business has also expanded rapidly. The company reported more than $30 billion in additional AI cloud contracts during the quarter, taking its remaining performance obligations to approximately $664 billion.
The numbers underline the scale of Oracle's AI infrastructure strategy: the company is directing huge amounts of capital towards data centres and cloud capacity while simultaneously looking to reduce costs elsewhere.
Oracle Layoffs and AI: What Happens Next?
Oracle's latest workforce reduction highlights the changing economics of the technology industry as companies redirect resources towards artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-centre infrastructure.
The latest round is smaller in publicly known scope than the workforce reduction during fiscal 2026, but the absence of an official headcount means its ultimate impact remains unclear.
There are also reports of concerns about potential further job cuts, including possible implications for Oracle's India operations. However, the company has not publicly confirmed the scale or timing of any future India-specific layoffs.
For now, Oracle's strategy reflects a broader trend across the technology sector: aggressive investment in AI infrastructure alongside tighter control of workforce and operating costs.
