A five-match T20 series is being played between India and South Africa. The South African team has taken a 2-1 lead over India. Team India is being captained by Rishabh Pant. However, his captaincy has not been so good and India is in danger of losing the series. In such a situation, there will be pressure on Pant to bring Team India back in the series on Friday.
Pant is taking over the captaincy for the first time in international matches. Earlier he has captained the Delhi franchise in the IPL. However, even in IPL, he could not make his team the champion. In 2021, Pant's Delhi team was out of the playoffs. At the same time, in 2022, Delhi was out of the league stage itself. In such a situation, the claim of Pant as captain is not looking that strong.
The role of the Decision Review System (DRS) is also considered important in T20. DRS means to challenge any decision of the umpire. In this situation, the matter reaches the third umpire and he gives the decision with full proof. Only the captain of the team has the right to challenge the decision of the umpire. DRS was started in 2009. It was included in ODIs in 2011.
Then the captain of India was Mahendra Singh Dhoni. As long as Dhoni was the captain of Team India, DRS was also known as Dhoni Review System. This is because whenever Dhoni took a review or challenged the decision of the umpire, he proved successful. That is, the umpire had to change his decision.
The biggest reason for Dhoni's success in DRS was his experience. Along with this, he was a wicket-keeper, which helped the bowlers to take reviews. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India won in about 50 percent review at the time of fielding i.e. the umpire had to change his decision. Dhoni's record in IPL has also been excellent.
At the same time, Pant has proved to be laggy in this matter so far. His record has not been anything special. In IPL 2021-22, Pant took a total of 17 reviews while fielding while captaining Delhi. Out of this, he got success in only three or rather the field umpire had to change his decision. In 14 cases, the decision of the field umpire proved to be correct. Pant's success rate in DRS in IPL is 17.6 percent.
At the same time, Pant has been able to captain in only three matches in international cricket so far. In the series being played against South Africa, Pant has taken three reviews and Pant failed in all three. That is, whenever Pant has taken a review, he is failing. In such a situation, Pant has not been able to live up to the parameters of his mentor Dhoni. However, it is too early to say so now. As Pant continues to play cricket and gets experience, so will his decisions.
