Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Norway on Monday. While there, he will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit and hold meetings with Norwegian leaders. This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Norway. It is also the first visit to Norway by any Indian Prime Minister in the last 43 years.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Additionally, he will hold bilateral talks with Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre. Together, the two leaders will also address the ‘India-Norway Business and Research Summit.’
Discussions on Several Key Issues
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that this visit will provide an opportunity to review the progress of relations between India and Norway. Both countries will discuss avenues to further strengthen trade and investment ties. Particular emphasis will be placed on the India-EFTA trade agreement, clean and green technologies, and the maritime economy (Blue Economy).
The MEA added that this visit will also serve as an opportunity to give fresh impetus to bilateral trade—which stood at approximately US$ 2.73 billion in 2024—and to the investments of nearly US$ 28 billion made by Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) in the Indian capital market.
Participation in the India-Nordic Summit
The third India-Nordic Summit is scheduled to take place in Oslo on May 19, 2026. Prime Minister Modi will be joined at this summit by the Prime Ministers of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden. Prior to this, similar summits were held in Stockholm in 2018 and in Copenhagen in 2022.
The objective of this summit is to further strategize India’s relations with the Nordic countries. Discussions will focus on sectors such as technology, innovation, renewable energy, defense, space, and the Arctic region. India’s total trade with the Nordic countries amounted to US$ 19 billion in 2024. This visit is expected to help strengthen supply chains and boost investment. It will also lend momentum to trade agreements between India and European nations.
