New Delhi, May 1 (IANS) The Congress Thursday accused BJP leader Amit Shah of violating the poll code by appealing to people to vote for Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad April 30, and demanded action against him.
"Campaigning was not allowed on April 30, since polling was going on but he (Shah) addressed a gathering and media persons and made an appeal to vote for the BJP ... The tone and tenor of what Shah said is in violation of section 126/130 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951," K.C. Mittal, Congress secretary, legal and human rights department, said in a letter to the Election Commission.
Mittal alleged that BJP candidates Kirit Solanki from Ahmedabad West, Haribhai P. Chaudhary from Banaskantha and Mohan Kundariya from Amreli also made similar and identical statements April 30.
Mittal demanded that FIRs under relevant sections be registered against the BJP leaders.
Shah, a close aide of Modi, had referred to the BJP prime ministerial candidate as the change people wanted, after casting his vote at Navapur area in Ahmedabad.
"Modi has become a symbol of change for the country, and everybody believes that if he becomes the prime minister, he would find a solution to the last 10 years of misgovernance," Shah told media persons April 30.
