E-commerce sector giant Amazon can lay off about 10,000 people. According to the New York Times report, thousands of people may lose their jobs in the next week itself. The company has taken this decision due to lack of profit in the last few quarters.
Amazon is apprehensive that the economic recession is increasing continuously, in which case the company should reduce its expenses. The company also announced a hiring freeze last week. Many employees were also asked to look for jobs elsewhere. However, there has been no statement from Amazon regarding the layoffs so far.
Biggest layoff in Amazon history
According to the figures of 31 December 2021, Amazon has more than 16 lakh full-time and part-time employees. If the company fires 10,000 employees at once, it would be the biggest layoff in Amazon's history. Overall, the company is preparing to lay off 1% of its employees.
Robots are replacing humans
The company is promoting the use of robots in many units to do work. About 3 quarters of the packets that are delivered currently pass through some kind of robotic system.
Amazon Robotics Chief Ty Brady said that packaging could be 100% robotic systems in the next 5 years. He indicated that in the future, robots will replace human employees, but it will take a long time. Brady says that the work in the company will change, but the human need will always be there.
