Monday is considered very special for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after getting relief from the Supreme Court in the defamation case. Everyone's eyes, including the Congress, are on the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Today a decision can be taken on when Rahul's membership will be restored.
Lok Sabha officials said that necessary action would be taken after going through the copy of the Supreme Court order. He said that usually action is initiated within 30 minutes after the court's decision is read out and the forms related to such notifications are with the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
this is the case
Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has got immediate relief from the Supreme Court in a criminal defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark. The court, in an interim order on Friday, stayed the sentence of the Congress leader for the time being. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had refused to stay his sentence in a defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark. In such a situation, the big thing is that after getting relief from the Supreme Court, Rahul's Lok Sabha membership can be restored.
congress meeting
Meanwhile, the Congress has called a meeting of party MPs today, in which the demand for the reinstatement of Rahul Gandhi's membership is likely to be discussed. The meeting is to be held at the party's parliamentary office at 10.30 am.
Copy of order handed over to Lok Sabha Secretariat
Congress Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said on Saturday that a copy of the Supreme Court order, which had stayed Gandhi's sentence by a Surat court, has been formally handed over to the Lok Sabha Secretariat. The Supreme Court had in July issued notice to the Gujarat government and the complainant on an appeal by the Congress leader challenging the Gujarat High Court order.
There may be a delay in return.
A senior Lok Sabha official said on the condition of anonymity that now after getting relief from the Supreme Court, the eyes of the Congress are stuck on the Lok Sabha Secretariat. If the secretariat decides to take the Law Ministry's opinion, reinstatement can turn into a lengthy process, as happened in the case of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Mohd Faisal earlier this year. He got relief from the Kerala High Court in January but had to wait for almost two months before returning to the Lok Sabha. However, in the case of Rahul Gandhi, the chances of such a move are slim.

In both the upcoming meetings of the I.N.D.I.A and the Congress, the opposition leaders will discuss plans for future steps if Gandhi's disqualification is not revoked at the earliest. Congress Lok Sabha MLA Manickam Tagore said that we all hope that the Lok Sabha Speaker will take the right decision as soon as possible.
