Remote Electronic Voting Machine: Now you can vote sitting from any state of the country, what is the difference between EVM and RVM?

Posted on 5th Jan 2023 12:16 pm by rohit kumar

In a country with a population of more than 130 crores, whether it is a general election or a state election, both matter a lot. In a democracy, each person's vote is very valuable. Every year crores of people migrate to other states for jobs and studies in our country, which also affects the voting percentage. To deal with this problem, the Election Commission said a few days ago that it has developed a prototype of a Remote Electronic Voting Machine for local migrant voters.

Political parties have been invited for their demonstration on 16 January. A note has also been issued regarding remote voting machines. Political parties have also been asked to express their views on implementing it legally, administratively, and technically. The biggest question is what is the difference between RVM and EVM?

What is the difference between RVM and EVM?

RVM is a modified version of EVM. It will be easier for domestic migrants to vote through RVM. Domestic Migrant means those people whose identity card has the name of some other state but they live in some other state due to work or other reasons. For example, if you are a resident of Uttar Pradesh, but you are living in Delhi due to work, studies, or any other reason, then during the elections of Uttar Pradesh, you will be able to sit in Delhi and vote. That's why it is named Remote EVM. Please tell that the work of its construction will be done by a public company sector only. Significantly, RVM will control 72 constituencies from one pulling station.

Why is RVM needed?

Let us tell you that in the last three general elections, only one-third of the voters have cast their votes. The concern about not increasing the voting percentage has increased a lot. According to the data, only 67.4% of the more than 91 crore voters voted in the 2019 general elections. The voting percentage in the 2014 general election was 66.4% and in the 2009 election, it was 58.2%.

In fact, according to the rules of the Election Commission, if voters want, they can get their voter ID made for the state they go to, but most of the voters do not do so, which affects the voting percentage. According to the 2011 census, 453.6 million Indians, or 37% of the population are 'overseas'. RVM is also like EVM, it will not be connected to any internet. The laptop will be used to set up RVM. However, the laptop will also not connect to the internet.
