The UN's nuclear chief has warned that Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine is completely out of control. He urged Russia-Ukraine to allow experts to visit the complex at the earliest to stabilize the situation and avoid a nuclear accident. International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Grassi said the situation at the Zaporizhzhya plant in the southeastern city of Enerhodar was getting dangerous every day.
It was captured by Russian troops at the beginning of March following an attack on Ukraine on 24 February. "Every principle of nuclear security has been violated and what is at stake is very serious and dangerous," he said. Grassi cited several security breaches at the plant, saying it was located near Russian-controlled territory where fierce fighting was going on. The physical integrity of the plant has not been respected. The IAEA chief said he and his team needed security and the immediate cooperation of Russia and Ukraine to reach the nuclear plant.
The possibility of an accident like Chernobyl
IAEA chief Rafael Grassi said, "The supply chain of equipment-spare parts here has been disrupted, so we are not sure that the plant is safe." This requires monitoring whether nuclear material is being protected or not. If its safety is not taken care of, then accidents like Chernobyl which happened in 1986 at this plant can happen. This would be extremely dangerous as the plant is about 110 km from Kyiv.
