Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud got angry over the listing of an application in the court on Thursday. He told senior advocate Vikas Singh in a loud voice, 'Shut up. Leave the court right now. You can't scare us!'
Vikas Singh is the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). He was appealing to a bench of Chief Justice, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala to hear an application demanding land for lawyers. He said that he has been trying for six months to get the matter listed for hearing, but has not been able to succeed.
Did the Supreme Court bench sit empty for a single day- CJI
On Vikas Singh's appeal, the CJI said that you cannot demand this. Also, asked whether the Supreme Court bench has been sitting empty for a single day. On this, the bar president said, 'I am not saying that you people sit empty. I am just trying to get my case listed. If it doesn't happen, I will have to take the matter to the House of Lordship (CJI). I do not want the bar to be taken in this way.
On this comment of Vikas Singh, the CJI said in a loud voice, 'Don't threaten a Chief Justice like this. Is this your behavior? have a seat, please. In this way, your case will not be listed. Please get out of my court. I will not list the cases like this.
I am not afraid of your words. I am the Chief Justice. I am here since March 29, 2000. I am in this profession for 22 years. I have never allowed myself to come under pressure from any member of the bar, litigant, or anyone else. I will not let this happen even in the last two years of my career. You will be treated as a common litigant. Please don't force me to do anything you don't want to do.'
waiting for 20 years
On this, Singh said that the lawyers have been waiting for the chambers for 20 years. Just because the bar doesn't do something doesn't mean it shouldn't be approved. On this, the CJI said, 'Please keep your voice low. This is not the way to behave as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association. You are asking to give the land given to the Supreme Court to the Bar. I have taken my decision. It will be heard on February 17.
Sibal and Kaul apologized
According to the report, later senior advocates Kapil Sibal and NK Kaul apologized to the CJI on behalf of the Bar.
