The Russo-Ukraine war does not seem to be over. Russian President Vladimir Putin has now intensified the war against Ukraine. The Russian army has also targeted residential areas with its missiles in the past. Since then, European and other countries have intensified aid to Ukraine. Along with missiles, hi-tech drones are also being given by the US to Ukraine. Meanwhile, now Canada has also made a big announcement regarding Ukraine.
Announcement of financial help from government bonds
Canada has announced the sale of government-backed 5-year bonds to raise funds for Ukraine. Canada has become the first country to do so with this. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau announced at an annual meeting of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Winnipeg that Canadians will now be able to go to major banks to buy bonds that mature after five years with interest. These funds will be used to support the government of Ukraine.
New sanctions on 35 Russian persons
Trudeau has also called for new sanctions on 35 Russian people. These include executives of the gas company Gazprom and its subsidiaries. Along with this, restrictions have also been imposed on six other energy sector entities. Canada has the largest number of Ukrainian diaspora and people there have lobbied for Canada to impose increasingly tough sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky said - thanks, now every Canadian can help us
After Canada's announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trudeau. Writing on Twitter, Zelensky said the bond would allow every Canadian to contribute to our victory. Trudeau, however, did not specify when the bonds would be issued for sale. At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland declined to say whether Canada would contribute the total value of the bonds it backed.
