After the spectacular victory of the Mahayuti in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024, there is suspense over the name of the Chief Minister. The parties that won the most seats in the Mahayuti alliance are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). So it is obvious that the CM will also be one of them. By the way, at present, there are two contenders for the post of CM - Devendra Fadnavis of BJP and Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena. In such a situation, Ajit Pawar can play the role of CM maker in finalizing the name of the Chief Minister.
Out of the total 235 seats of the Mahayuti, BJP won 132, Shiv Sena 57, and NCP 41 seats. If we look at these election figures, the BJP cannot form a government without Shiv Sena and NCP. A magical figure of 145 is required to form a government, so one of them must be with it. On the other hand, Shiv Sena and NCP will also not be able to do anything together because both together will be able to add only 98 seats. However, Ajit Pawar has made his stand clear that if Devendra Fadnavis becomes the CM, then he has no problem with it. Shiv Sena seems to be very angry with his statement.
Former minister and Shiv Sena official Ramdas Kadam said on Tuesday (November 26, 2024) that due to Ajit Pawar, Shiv Sena's power to claim the CM post in the Mahayuti has been reduced as the NCP chief said that he has no objection to Devendra Fadnavis becoming the Chief Minister.
He said, 'We feel that Eknath Shinde should become the Chief Minister and BJP wants to make Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar surrender in the name of Fadnavis. In this way, he has reduced the power of our claim. Whatever happens, there will be no dispute in the Mahayuti. We contested the elections under the leadership of Eknath Shinde and we got a big victory.'
Looking at the difference in seats, NCP also realizes that if Devendra Fadnavis becomes the Chief Minister, then he will have equal stature as Shiv Sena in the Mahayuti because after BJP which won 132 seats, Shiv Sena and NCP are the second largest party in the alliance.
After the meeting held in Mahayuti on Monday, it seems that Ajit Pawar is ready to take the post of Deputy CM once again under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis. Just like it happened in the 2019 elections. However, then the BJP government fell in just 80 hours. Secondly, Ajit Pawar can consider that if Eknath Shinde becomes the Chief Minister, then due to the difference in seats, he will be able to demand the same post for NCP as BJP.
