New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS) Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL), which provides telecom services under the MTS brand, has forayed into the home WiFi segment with the launch of Homespot Instant WiFi solution, a company statement said here Wednesday.
The launch marks a strategic shift in focus for MTS from being primarily a dongle-driven data company to a WiFi solutions provider.
The product is being targeted at people in the age group 16-35 years with small families, with higher focus on tier II and tier III cities.
The product is specially designed for families who consume internet on multiple devices including smartphones with different internet connections when at home, the statement said.
While internet usage in the country is booming, only 3 percent of the country's population has access to internet at home, according to a survey done by Gallup in 2011.
"MTS is traditionally known as a data dongle provider in the Indian market. The plan is to now shift focus and be recognised as a world-class WiFi solutions provider," Leonid Musatov, chief marketing & brand officer - MTS India, said.
"With the Homespot Instant WiFi solution, we have a fantastic product to address the internet needs of multiple users including smartphone customers at home with a single, easy-to-use device," he added.
